It means put yourself in their shoes.
Sympathy means feel sorry for them.
Empathy means actually feeling their pain.

Well satire is making fun of something... so making something look ridiculous, I'm not sure how you would make homophobia look ridiculous in a poem but...

make fun of the people who are afraid of gays and bi's and such.

or if you are homophobic and writing about how you dislike gays, then make fun of them I guess?
