You can't stop leading this guy on anymore. You need to tell him exactly how you feel towards him right away. Let him know that you still care for him in a friend way but right now you see yourself with someone else. But I will have to say I have been through this before with a great guy friend that I have and it sucks a lot. I told him that I wanted to date someone else and he was okay with it, well later the guy I was with turned out to be a jackass and hurt me. Well, I really regretted not dating my great guy friend. But I am not saying that will happen to you, but I would say just be careful either way you go.
