How much do the doctors have to tell my parents?

Asked by fau about 1 year ago, 7 answers.

Okay, so say I had a problem, *cough* *cough* BULIMIA *cough* and I talked to my doctor about it...and say I'm under 18...would he tell my parents? Is he supposed to? Could he? And say he knew my mom on a personal basis...would he like...tell her and...

be like, "Now, you didn't hear this from me, but..." or w/e. AND if I DID talk to him and I DID do something about it...would my parents find out? because I don't know how people (kids) can get treatment without their parents knowing.
But I really don't want mine to know.
I really really don't want them to know.
But I'm pretty sick of living with this crap, not only because of the physical repercussions but also because of the way it makes me think and feel.
But I still don't want them to know.
Any suggestions...?

Well first off belimia is a serious thing, lots of teens have had problems with it.. Since you are a minor and belima can be life threatening he would almost have to tell your parents. They would need to co-sign for treatment and all different kinds of procedures. I dont think your parents would punish you for it, I'm sure they would help you in any way they could. Many people die from this and if it's for your best intrest at heart I'm sure your doctor will tell them. Good luck

Your priority shouldn't be whether or not your parents find out - it should be Your desire to get well and have a future - the other doesn't matter - YOU matter...I wish you the best !!

Dear genericusername,
Your doctor will probably tell your parents. Although they take an oath the oath specifies unless it could be a life and death situation. Bulimia is now a death situation. Among other things it can cause the heart to stop. Health care is now discovering just how serious this condition is and it has jumped up the list as being a leading cause of death in teens. So I'm assuming he will suggest treatment and intervention as well.
Sue...good luck

Good luck!

Since "BULIMIA" is considered a mental illness rather than a physical illness by most professionals your parents will have to become involved. Doctors have an ethical stance to protect their patients when it comes to non life threating physical issues. If you became pregnant your doctor could protect your privacy and most likely would. Since your illness now could have dire consequences if left untreated he could be liable because you are a minor. If you are under the age of 16 you do not have privacy rights under the law anyway.

If your body has not become effected with the side effects of this illness you can reach out to a counselor. School counselors can be very helpful with directing you to another counselor that can help you with this particular problem on a pro bono bases and "would" most likely keep your condition confidential since they are held to a different standard when it comes to juveniles.
