How many wives does islamic law allow a man to have at the same time?

islam allowed man to have 4 wives at the time as god knows the best about human nature and man with his nature -whatever religion he is- is a liking to be with more than one woman at the time but it`s not what all men do but they are likely geneticlly prepared to this but islam forrbid men to be with more than a women outside the limit of marriage and it`s forbiden to have physical relation for both men and women outside border of marriage

In addition to what totyfrooty has stated, a muslim man shall only marry more than one wife if he is able to treat them all equally, example:

1) if he spends 2 nights with one wife, he should do the same with his other wifes .
2) if he buys a pair of shoes worth £10/ $10 for one wife, he should buy the exact shoes with the same value for his other wifes whether they want them or not etc

I f the husband fears that he will be unable to treat all wifes equally, then he should not marry more than one.

The advice given above is mostly correct and shows that the very strong recommendation is that of monogamy. Under very stricct conditions and extreme circumstances the Quranic verse alluded to by Aaliyah "and marry believing women of your choice, two three or four, but if you fear injustice, then marry only one". It is clear that conditions such as war and disease which skew the sex-ratio in favour of women and the situations of widowhood or being a divorcee are the only real reasons for desiring to marry a second wife according to the majority of Muslim scholars. A small number also suggest that a wife who doesn't provide children can be a factor, although with so many children being orphaned I find this more than a little bit selfish.
Although these opinions are likely to create controversy, I would like to say that the Prophet of Islam was married multiple times, only to illustrate the Divine law as expressed in the Quran and only married one virgin, Aysha, there was never any question of a "harem".
There is much more to be said on this topic, but monogamy is preferred while polygamy is only allowed under divinely ordained circumstances
