How long does bankruptcy stay on your record?

I was watching a TV show about debt and one of the people decided to file for bankruptcy to erase her credit card bills. Does this show up on your record? Your credit score? How long does it stay on your record for if it does?

It stays on your record for seven years, and after that, it can stay longer, but you can get the credit reporting companies to remove it after a certain length of time.
