We always put the eggs in the cold water, brought the water to a boil, reduced heat to simmer, then cook until they float.
For soft boiled eggs bring water to rolling boil, add the eggs, cook 3 minutes, then remove. Of course soft boiled eggs are not fully cooked so there is some risk eating them this way. If you get a bad egg it can make you sick.
