How do I tell if a dog is low-shed/dander or not?

Asked by eagelcrossing 8 months ago, 6 answers.

It seems some terriers are low shedding/dander but others are not? How do you tell when you want to adopt a mutt?

It really depends on the breed, if it is mixed it is really hard to tell. If the dog doesn't have really long hair you should be fine. You may need to brush it often for a couple of weeks/months, after a while good nutrition should help keep the shedding to a minimum.

When you look in that dogs eyes and the dog looks into your eyes and you fall in love. The dog is looking at you and saying I am yours and you are feeling some thing inside you, that is love.

That is when you are ready to bring the right dog for you home

If you don't understand what I am taking about and you think what I said is silly, you are not ready for a dog.

I totally understand about falling in love with a dog... the issue is the family who visits who have allergies. We will not be one of those families that have a dog for a couple of months and then give it up down the road becuase of such complications. We also want to get our dog from the pound or a rescue due to the overpopulation and the many adult dogs who go overlooked... THe family members who stay with us can tolerate the low shed/dander dogs (poodles, some terriers... ) but since mix breeds are the name of the game where we are looking for dogs, we needed some pointers. Often the dogs are incorrectly identified. And it seems some terriers are low shed adn some are not???

Looks like angel14215 has covered it for you. We have a lady on here that works in a Shelter maybe Editor can answer some more about IDing dogs in the shelter.

I will leave her a message and see if she can get back with you.

I appreciate the help... especially the link tip that was sent. The help we need is HOW to identify the dogs (traits of shedders/low shedders) since the breeds are so often incorrectly identified. Or because they are mixes, all the breeds aren;t listed anyway. and we still need to tell if it sheds a lot or not.
