Does anyone have a clue as to why my car is at 4 rpm when I'm driving at 60 mph?

Transmission could be starting to go, Is it an automatic or manual?, Check the tranny fluids aswell, and what kind of car is it?

I was thinking the trans fluid also. It's a 1999 Lexus. I don't think I've ever had trans fluid replaced or serviced. If I did, it was in 2005 or 2006. I've put about 50k miles on it since I got it used.

I would check the transmission fluids first, if they are low top it up and see how it runs, or if its dirty (not bright red) then take it to a shop and get the transmission fluid replaced (they will drain it flush it out and replace it). If it still continues to act up then it could be starting to deteriorate inside (since it is a newer model of lexus it shouldnt, but you never know)

I assume you mean 4,000 RPM?

Anyway, the speed the engine revs at a specific speed depends on the ratio of the gear it is in and the ratio of the differential.

My Miata revs at at about 3,000 RPM at 60 MPH in its top gear. My Protege5 revs at about 2,600 RPM at the same speed. 4,000 RPM seems a tad high. My guess is that you aren't getting into overdrive. Some cars have a switch for turning off overdrive. You should check to see if it is turned off. You might have a light on the dash that says something like "OD Off."
