God vs man

my daughter chopped my head off Asked by rickd about 1 month ago, 21 answers.

Do people who are atheist or agnostic hate jesus, or do they just hate the man-made religion part of it?

I don't hate Jesus, why would I? The Bible Jesus is obviously fictionalized, if not outright fiction.

I don't even hate religion per se, but I do hate that people take ancient myths so seriously, that they are willing to inflict force against others over it, and to brainwash children to believe it long before the children have any critical thinking skills.

I am really gone off religion because of the man made part.
so many people go around calling themselves holy and saying they are following God in what he did, yet all they do is ridicule people that aren't like them..telling people 'theyre going to hell' etc..when really if anyone would be going to hell, it would 'sure as hell' be them!

I'd like to be into religion
as god seemed to help my mother out of tough times
and you hear of people seeing mericles..they cant all be crazy!!
but theres just so much hate in the world I dont know if I can believe

I don't 'hate' either of them...

The issue I have, is with the people who abuse religion, or have distorted views regarding God & religion.

Well I'm atheist... And I don't hate god. o_o What's there to hate about him? I mean why hate just because I don't believe? That's just wrong. -_-

No, I don't hate jesus or g-d. I just don't like anyone who feels they MUST try to convert me. I don't want anyone's agenda crammed down my throat.
What ever happened to live and let live.
I also have a very hard time with those who promote hatred, racism, bigotry towards others because of their race, religion, sexual preference all in the name of 'the lord'.

Atheists don't hate jesus. They are aware of God and jesus, however they have chosen not to believe and make that choice clear by calling themselves atheists whereas christians are also aware, but HAVE chosen to believe and call themselves christians.

I don't hate Jesus. I never met the guy. The Bible stories of him seem rather far fetched and I can't even be sure he actually existed. Many scholars feel Jesus was a composite of earlier hero/savior figures in other religions rather than a literal person. The similarities of the Jesus myth and those of Zoroaster, Krishna, Mithra, Attis, Horus and Dionysus certainly point to the possibility that Jesus is an archetype rather than a person.

I personally hate the idea of it
I really dont care weather people beleive in it or not,
whatever makes you happy is fine with me
but religiouse people tend to force there religion down everyones throats too much
I've found that most of them really dont respect the fact thats its okay to not beleive in anything or nothing
most of them try to convert you, saying how good 'god' is,
then give up when they cant and go,
'ok well its your life and you can do what you will with it'
theres no respect...they dont care...if your not one of them they really dont respect you
I also hate the true christian/catholic religion
this is going back when religiouse people were forcing people to do horrible things
and doing horrible things themselves...in the old days...they were too strict and stuck-up
I've come to learn that just because you dont beleive in something doesnt mean you have to respect it
and I dont respect religion itself because I dont agree with most of its teachings
but I respect the fact that people can choose to beleive in whatever they want
it doesnt affect my life, I know who I am
and whatever makes you happy in the long run you should stick with

As far as atheists are concerned either he was just a guy, or he was a figment of someone's imagination, or a combination of mythical figures, and therefore not real... and you can't really hate something that's not real?

Christians and other theists usually don't want to accept that there are logical, rational reasons for doubting their religion. So they try to explain atheism and agnosticism by saying such people must be angry at God over something that's happened in their lives.

As you can see from most of the responses here, that's not the case.

I remember a friend who was looking for some kind of spiritual certainty in her life, but was really traumatised following rejection by her parents (she'd been brought up instead by loving grandparents). She turned to me once in the middle of a spiritual conversation and said: 'Floss, I LOVE Jesus, but I absolutely HATE God.' It was relatively easy to see why she might feel that way, given her experiences.

PS, that wasn't in response to mjax1979's points above (I hadn't read them, sorry mjax).

Thinking about anger, though, I do sense it in a lot of the resistance I encounter to any of my ideas. This is not just talking about God to an atheist. It is also in talking about evolution to a creationist. We do feel very safe in our own thinking, and tend to go along tracks which feel secure to us. If someone tries to take us off those tracks we panic and feel resistant and, indeed, angry. There are plenty of atheists or creationists on this site, however (mjax1979, jimahl, filetofspam, silverwings and torikeene, for example) who are big enough not to show that panic reaction when presented with alternative ideas.

Good points flossheal. And thanks for the kudos...

It is not god or jesus or even your religion that makes me angry. All of those things are not important enough to me to make me angry. As flossheal implied, I get angry when religion gets in the way of progress. Scientific and social. When eveolution is simply dismissed by people who don't know the first thing about it, or the body of evidence that supports it, yes it makes me angry. And it is the same thing when religion is used to legislate peoples behavior (gay marriage) or to prevent sicentific research (stem cell). I don't see these things as just a difference of opinion with them. I see them as obstructionist, and an impediment to progess. And somethimes they are downright dangerous.

How could I hate something I don't believe in? I do DISLIKE (not hate) religion, I feel that it brings nothing but pain and suffering to people in the end.
