How do I get rid of mice that are gnawing on my tulip stems and eating my lily bulbs?

I've learned that putting spices (strong spices) in your garden have kept cats from sh*tng in a garden. So maybe ot will turn the mice off as well. I would think pesticides would kill your plants.
