Difference between prison and jail?

What's the difference between prison and jail? I wasn't aware that there was a difference, so...HELP?

I don't know much about that. But a prison can be a people ya' know. a prisoner? jail it's just the place.

Prison inmates have been tried and convicted of crimes, where as those in jail may be awaiting trial. A prison is under the jurisdiction of either federal or state, while a jail holds people accused under federal, state, county and/or city laws.

It doesn't really matter unless you plan on studing/practising law.
