The diet most recommended for hyptertensives is DASH or Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension. This was devised by doctors and in tests was effective in reducing blood pressure in many patients.

This diet is designed to be low in sodium but high in calcium, potassium, and magnesium. It has plenty of whole grians, fruits, vegetables, and moderate amounts of lean meat and low-fat dairy.

If your relative is overweight loosing weight may help lower blood pressure. The amount of exercise will depend on her health and level of conditioning. If she hasn't exercised in years brief walks are the best way to start exercising again. After that whatever she enjoys doing.
