The easiest way is to go to a jeweler and have them check it.
They usually use a heat probe. Real stones disperse heat quickly and they won't heat up with the probe. This takes about 30 seconds and I've never been charged to have them check. It also doesn't hurt the stone the way other ways of testing will. Even if its a fake, you might still want it, so why ruin it
One more thing...
When you go to your jeweler, ask if the jewelry will always be in your presence during the exam. If the jeweler says they will not evaluate the jewelry in front of you, find another jeweler.
My ex was a gemologist. I think that she could spot cubic zirconia from across the room.
What goran said is true, a diamond tester tests the thermal conductivity of the specimin. Diamond has the highest thermal conductivity of any natural stone. In the late 1990s a new imposter arrived, gems made of synthetic silicon carbide which in jewlery was called Moissanite. Moissanite's thermal conductivity is close enough to diamond that testers misidentified it as diamond. It is also very hard, nearly as hard as diamond. Skilled gemologists can identify synthetic with at a loupe and there is also a tester that identifies this through its phosophorence.
My ex showed me a water test to identify diamonds but to tell the truth I don't remember the details. Your best bet is to show the stone in question to a jewler.
I know this is a year later, but I have an ASHA diamond from betterthandiamond.com and it looks just as real and is almost as hard as a real diamond! A real diamond is a 10 for hardness and mine is a 9! In order to find out if it is real or not you must go to a jeweler and get it tested! My ASHA diamond won’t come up real but some moissanite’s do if they do not have an up to date machine! A lot of fake diamonds look 100% real! Most of the engagement rings out there have fake diamonds because real ones are extremely expensive and man-made ones are just as nice with out the extremely high cost!
