Depression prohibited

Why is it that if someone asks for help with depression or something, their question gets locked? Don't you think its kind of rude?

So...you ignored my comment about the *string* of bebo suicides.

Not just one *several*. It's a serious BIG deal.

And yes, if they have nobody else to turn to - our policy is provide a resource and lock and or delete.

Because yes, people can be rude & hurtful. Sad fact: not just one, but several teen age boys have signed up, and told several people to go & off themselves...we deleted their accounts, but you can imagine how terrible that was.

So it's for the protection of the *asker* as much as protection of our own site.

Usually when someone asks about depression theyre in the lines of cutting,or doing somehitng they know they shouldnt.In these cases,they know the ebst thing to do is to contact an adult,so leaving the question open can be pointless.
Not to mention many arrogant people turn things like this sour.

And, you do realize that there was a famous myspace suicide...? And a string of them on Bebo...?

Personally, I'd like to avoid that at all costs. So yep, we're a bit dogmatic. And since we're NOT mental health professionals, how in the world are we supposed to be able to help?

Fact: we can't. Maybe - just maybe - somebody else, somewhere, would be able to shrug it off if something serious happened on their website. We can't monitor everything but we try very hard

yes I do think it is rude but a lot of pplz that think depression pplz are a waste of time report it

 
I don't mind seeing those questions getting 'locked', but I think that the adviser who locks the question should first make sure that at least one answer gives links to hotlines or 'help' sites.

It's easy to forget that many many similarly situated users are going to view the question so it would be beneficial if they were exposed to helpful links.

When I see questions like that that have been deleted or locked then I attempt to Fun Mail the individual with the something similar to the following:

There was a famous myspace suicide? Huh. Weird. Yeah, I get what your saying. People can be jerks. But - and I speak from experience- its worse when people refuse to listen. So what if they have no one to turn to? I'm not saying its your responsibility, because its not, but still, just put yourself in someone elses shoes for a second. Now me, im just a rebel with a bit of a lost cause, but there are some people with nowhere to turn to. Doing nothing can be just as harmful as doing something. Take this fo Example.)
You see a little girl outside all alone one night when your walking home from work. You wonder for a second If she's with anyone but continue walking past. the next day you read in the paper that that little girl die in her sleep in some alley from the cold. Its a bit of an exasgeration and its not even really my story, but still.. you never know.

Oh, I just read about that suicide. thats so sad. ITs cruel what people do.

Please also keep in mind that we DO Fun Mail the user with hotlines, etc. and info on where to get help AFTER we lock the question. Every advisor should do this after locking the question. We don 't just lock it and leave them high and dry.
