Dating vs courtship

Ok, I've seen in some topics about this "dating vs courtship" thing. What is it? And why do people think that "courting" is better than dating? I cannot really see the difference, they both seem to involve a guy and a girl getting together.

I personally am not too sure on it, but I think that when people refer to 'courting' it seems more romantic. For example, if you say you're dating someone in this day and age, people automatically assume it's a sexual relationship. Whereas, if you say you're courting someone instead, it's got more of the implication that you're simply trying to win someones affection. That's just the impression I get.
