the incubation period of an egg is around 21 days... if in a couple of days it hasnt hatched there's probably no chick?

Hold it up to a semi-bright light...that's the way they used to check for embryo's in eggs in the old day...actually, they used to "candle eggs" in the old days...

Tho at this stage the chick would be taking up the whole shell...If you decide to break it open...do it outside, just incase all you have is a rotten egg.

If you have no rooster, there's definetely no chick.
If you do, follow instructions above
