Birth control pills contain hormones that stop ovulation. During ovulation an egg is released from the ovaries, without ovulation there is no egg to be fertilized and pregnancy cannot occur.

BC pills do NOTHING to the sperm...
If you want to kill the sperm, use a spermicide also...but never alone, it has a lower rate of prevention...

The pill that I am on restricts ovulation. No egg, no baby. When a pill is missed, ovulation usually happens the next day. That is my understanding, but I'm no doctor.

If you miss a pill ovulation will happen that is why you are told if you miss a pill to take it as soon as you remember. If you can't do that and you have sex make sure you use a condom otherwise you could get pregnant.
