Wondering how the bible can't be proof of god's existence

Hi, I was just wondering how the bible can't be proof of god's existence, I mean, I personally believe that man wrote the bible and god inspired them(told them what to write), some recent comments about it are, it's written by ancient men, well pretty...

much any history was written down by ancient men, right? If you don't believe in god, then of course you'll say it was written by ancient men. Thanks for your opinions.

For the same reason that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is not proof that Harry Potter exists.

I believe the Bible to be the inspired, infallible, word of God - true from 'cover to cover'.

There are all sorts of religious texts

The Bible
The Egyptian Book of the Dead
The Tibetan Book of the Dead
The Avesta
Tao Te Ching
Bhagavad Gita
etc.

How can you know the Bible is the word of God and not all the other texts writen by ancient men?

In contrast to believing in the Bible, I believe:

1. That God is that Creative/Causative Force that exists before the beginning of the universe/time and continues to exist outside of the universe and time.

2. That "Force" created/caused the spiritual/soul entities to come into being.

3. The spiritual/soul entities continued the "Creation" with the "Big Bang". And, through evolution and possibly subtle manipulations, have caused the current state of affairs.

4. The spirits/souls choose to inhabit the various physical bodies that they have created in order to experience physical reality.

5. When bodies die the spirit/soul continues to exist and often times reincarnates into another body in order to continue its growth.

6. The purpose of it all is for the spirits/souls (entities) to gain knowledge and experience and to ultimately rejoin or evolve back into the Oneness of God.

 
The Bible is a book of history and guidance for peoples of certain times. The Old Testament was meant for the societies and peoples of ancient times. The New Testament was meant to change much of the Old Testament law and to guide the society and people of two thousand years ago.

The Bible worked during the time periods it was meant to cover. Its guidance protected the people and gave value and purpose to their lives.

The problem is that the Bible was meant for past eras and was successful therein. It, however, did not keep up with the times and technologies during the advancement of mankind.

There may still be some lessons that can be learned from studying the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. But, the lessons must be tempered with the knowledge that exists in the current time period.

Man and his technology has evolved considerably since Biblical times. The Bible has not evolved accordingly. It is therefore the province of man to interpret the whole Bible and attempt to allow its relevant parts to fit into the lifestyles of the current era.

As long as they do not infringe on the rights of others, men are free to follow the teachings of the Bible for themselves. Your rights and beliefs end where mine begin.

 
The Bible is a "crutch" which is necessary for some but not for all. It is a book written by men with the purpose of helping to guide other men through some of the pitfalls that life has to offer. It is also meant to give hope and purpose to those who may have no other way of finding same.

Just as with other fictional works, it is not meant to be taken literally but parabolically. Parts of its historical accounts may be factual while other parts are symbolic. And, yet other parts are simply devices wherein to protect the health and well-being of people of that era.

It takes many religions to give guidance to those who are in need of direction. Some use the Bible as their basis while others use other Books. They all serve a needed purpose. They all benefit the society of man.

Just because the Bible (or some other Book) is right for you does not mean or make it right for everyone else. The human race is a diverse species. It has many different cultures and Beliefs. Grant to each their right to choose that which fits them.

WOW- great answer, to me the bible is proof of mans imagination, not proof of A GOD.

I believe the bible to be versions of truth however, unless you actually witness something personally how can you be absolutely sure anything is true?

I just stop believing in it altogether.

to me.. the bible is a good story a man wrote... all people want in the world is control.. im not religious at all and if you believe in god, well good for you(not being sarcastic or rude).. its always good to believe in something bigger then yourself.. but to me.. the bible is just a story.. I believe that a person wrote it to gain followers.( the church)... see how many people believe in what the church says and what they do.. the pope is one of the most powerful people in the world... that is what I believe

The Bible resembles Homer's 'The Illiad' ...a book comprised of a number of historical facts, blended with a lot of fantasy.

The simple answer to the question is, in order to count as proof of God, something about the Bible would have to be inexplicable in the absence of a god.

But it isn't. It's trivially easy to understand how the Bible could have been written even in the absence of any gods. All that's necessary to explain it is belief in gods. But such belief need not be rooted in any actual gods.

So, that's why the Bible doesn't count as proof, or even relevant evidence, of any gods.

Silverwings, how do you reconcile the idea that Satan is somehow causing humans to discredit the Bible, with the concept of free will?

Do we have free will, or are we simply puppets of Satan? You can't have it both ways.

There is no reason to push, it discredits itself with every new scientific discovery. There are very few people in this world who would be so delusional as to say: "I believe the Bible to be the inspired, infallible, word of God - true from 'cover to cover'." And most of those seem to be on this site.

That is because each new generation knows more than the last, and as we learn more and more about our world most people realize it is nothing but a story. And it is a story that is far from original, as everthing in it was adopted from pagans.

Ok so according to your logic because history was written down by men in the past and we believe these historical accounts, we should believe in the bible. Well here's how your logic is flawed. First of all we dont blindly believe in all historical accounts, usually there is more than one account and there is outside proof (so we believe in dinosaurs because we have bones, not because someone wrote of their existence). Unfortunately there is no proof outside the bible or other religious books that there is a God. Secondly, you're making the assumption that all historical accounts are accurate. I'll quote eleni on this one, just because someone wrote about Harry Potter doesnt make him real. And if the Harry Potter book survives in 2000 years, wont make it any more real...
