depression is sometimes called uni-polar = meaning you're down and depressed...at one end of the emotion spectrum...all the time.

bipolar [also known as manic depression] = is when you swop between both ends of the emotions spectrum. you're depressed at one time, then hyper/happy another time.

there's...
bipolar 1: http://www.behavenet.com/capsules/disorders/bip1dis.htm
bipolar 2: http://www.behavenet.com/capsules/disorders/bip2dis.htm
Cyclothymic: http://www.behavenet.com/capsules/disorders/cclthymcdis.htm

I hope this helps.

Pretty much what they above two people said. One of the worst things about people with bipolar disorder is they don't know why they are feeling these emotions. I have a friend who suffers from bipolar disorder and she'll just start to cry and get upset with no real reason.
