How to stop these people from talking bad about me?

I am doing my studies in a place far away from my native and the sorroundings around me is quiet different.every person who knows me speak bad about me to everyone else like I am a failure,useless guy...the more I stay away from these people ,they...

try to plunder or abuse me more.they always do back stabbing.please tell me what do I do to keep their mouth shut and more over even if I try to stay out from their reach ,they try to suck every thing from me like leach.please tell me what to do?I am trying more to be independent.please tell me a better way.I cannot leave that place because my studies are dependent on that

start talking to more people and show them that you are not what they say!
