why don't you just get a fish tank with a lid, that should surely protect it from your cat. is it a 'bayda' fish or a 'beta' fish? I had a beta fish (also known as a siamese fighter-fish) once. be careful you dont mix it with fish of a similar colour and size because I did that and they fought each other and the other fish killed my beta fish :,(

Well if you can't keep the fish safe from mittens then it would be better to not let mittens close to the fish. Cats love fish and love looking at them (as well as eating them!) but if you can keep your aquarium closed on top then the cat shouldn't be able to get to them even if he tries. I suggest investing in a good aquarium that the cat can't open. It would be better not to have to worry about the cat or the fish that way you can enjoy both.

Betas are VERY territorial and aggressive. They do best in a small tank all on their own. Try putting a mirror next to the tank of your beta - He'll puff himself up to look larger in defense. They don't need an airstone because in nature they are used to small spaces. In nature they live in small pools of water in the dry seasons. The males have beautiful long fins and females have shorter ones, they are both very colorful.

I have one named Poseidon. I have him in a large vase with a cover that has fake flowers on the top. The living plant and beta kits are harmful to betas. The roots ARE NOT a food source as many lead you to people. Betas can go a long time without food. So many people do the beta plant root thing... they have the fish for about 3 months untill it dies. It basically starves to death. They need pellets for nutrition - and it lasts a while because they eat very little - so it is VERY affordable.

Just keep your beta in a high place where the cat cannot reach and keep it in something that is covered. If you periodicaly find the cat near the fish, invest in a spray bottle and fill it with water. Give Mittens a squirt to discourage him.
