Golden rule number one - charge your battery up fully, then let it run down almost completely, then charge it up fully, then let it run down. Lithium Ion batteries need to "cycle".

Golden rule number two - Don't keep the charger plugged in when the battery is fully charged. Doing that will help to make your battery lose charge, and stop the battery from "cycling".

And, once in a while (say once every 10 charges) let the battery run out so it turns the computer off, then charge it. This will help to prolong your battery life - if you look after the battery properly, it is actually possible to make the battery have 3/4 of its original charge after 5 years, instead of 1/3 after 3 years which is the most common problem. This will depend on what laptop you have and the quality of the battery, but its a good example of what is possible.

Keep the lcd brightness as low as possible, and close the lcd or hibernate whenever possible.
