If hes not comfortable going out with friends then you should respect that.
but if you think he really likes you then ask. or have a friend ask.

Like la16love said, you need to respect his feelings. He already told you it would feel awkward, which in guy terms means...he doesnt want to date you. You arent going to change that, so either accept his friendship knowing thats all he will ever be, or kick his friendship to the curb, because you cant be friends with someone you have emotional feelings for. Just because YOU are attracted to someone, doesnt mean they are going to feel the same way back. Its just a part of life.
