How do I ask him to prom, should I?

OK I want to ask my good friend to prom, but im scared! We have known each other for six years and it just poped in my head one night that I should ask him, but im scared of rejection!
Any advice on what to do? Or how I should ask him?

Maybe you could ask him as a friend, so there isn't any fear of rejection. And if he shows sign of being interested while at the prom, let them develope. This way you won't be preoccupied with the labels.
