What do you think? American men opens doors and holds elevators opened for women. Do you happen to know how men are in other countries? (note: of course not all american men are like this but the majority are pretty respectful. Most men in my area/where...

I work are like this).

I don't think it's as easy as categorising them as "respectful American men"- that gives me the impression that these men are old respectful because they are American.

I'm of the mind it has little or nothing to do with the country you're in specifically, but more how you are raised. I know loads of guys from New Zealand, and they are really polite with women, opening doors, pulling out chairs. But, having said that, I'm a female, and was also taught by my mother to hold doors for other people that may be behind me. It's got nothing to do with the fact that I'm a New Zealander though, because plenty of New Zealanders weren't taught the same courtesies as I was.

There are always a few bad apples in the bunch though, who go ahead and ruin the reputation of those who try. For me, it's more about my upbringing in conjunction with personal choice. I could choose to go against what I've been taught and not hold doors and help people if I see they need it. Again, not because I'm a New Zealander, but because it's what I choose, and what I believe to be polite.

Lol Other countries look down on America (well most do) because Americans gives off bad impressions. Like Georgey the last president. Freaking idiot! Plus all the like wannabe gangsters are pretty like lame too (especially people who refer to themselves as New Yorkers). Plus the way some actors act like 50 cent >.< see what im sayin?

British men used to be surprised when I thanked them for opening a door for me - they'd got used to being told not to be sexist by other women! My answer was that anyone should hold open a door for anyone else - I'll do the same for them some day!

Geeze... thanks andyburton. I've been told by my friends that men opens doors for me because I'm pretty but I don't agree. I've always thought that most American men are repsectful and was raised with manners.

My male friend told me that pretty people get treated differently. He told me that if I didn't believe it then to sit in the lobby and watch people go through the doors. I don't have time to do that of course but I don't agree with him. I'm sorry if I happen to offend anyone but I think other men from other countries are respectul too. I was just curious if the % was as many as American men.

Thanks for for your time and opinion guys!

I think most American men are not very respectful to women. From my own experiences, foreign men are much more respectful to women.

It really depends on the culture of wherever you are from.

From my part of the world (Singapore) there is a very strong emphasis on being respectful on people older than you...even if they are not exactly very kind to you. Other than that, there is a real lack of "respectful" acts in the country.

Not sure about Americans

Though changing, so many parts of the world women are still second class to men. In much of Asia, women wait on men, literally hand and foot. They walk a "respectful" distance behind them. America has become such an equality minded place it is happening less and less that men open doors for women, allow them to be seated first. That is not the case in many European countries, where chivalry is still more common place. I was confronted by a woman one day as I opened a door to an office building for her. She turned and asked if I opened the door because she was a woman. My response, "No, I opened it for you because I am a gentleman". And walked on by her.
