Are greyhounds good pets?

I was looking at some grey hounds for adoption and I'm looking for a dog... but I have no experience with greyhounds lol, I've owned healers, rotties, labs, mutts, chihuahuas but never a greyhound. I have a healer/bordercollie mix and she is a little...

protective and shy, she isn't much into other dogs but some she really bonds with. I want a dog that will get along with her and be kind to the next door neighbr's kids, I want a sweet dog that is pretty laid back and won't need to be taken out to play everysingle day... are grey hounds the right dog for me?

Supposedly grey hounds are really sweet and affectionate and tend to bond to their owners, however I've never had one so I don't know from personal experience.

I've heard that they can be very well behaved, but they need exercise and room. It's their nature AND their training. After all they are taught to run their whole lives until they retire.

Talk with a greyhound adoption agency though and be very honest with what you need.

I think that it's marvelous that you want to adopt a dog. My daughter did that (with another breed) and adores her dog.

Like imyselfandme...I've heard that Greyhounds are sweet in the extreme, by nature...quiet, and non-boisterous in the house. They do need exercise, but I think, even that is moderate...nothing like Labs, Rots or Healers, that's for sure! After experiencing those breeds, a Greyhound will probably seem like a lazy dog! LOL

They shed little...but if you live in a very cold climate, you'll probably have to "dress" them for it...

Go for it...sounds to me like a GH is just what you're looking for.

I had one for awhile recently, and found that they (providing they are all alike) are foolish about people. Want lots and lots of love and attention, and actually demand it, do not take to crating, do not want to be left alone, want to be where you are, at all times, need to run their energy off, at least once per day. And they like to be the only dog, so they can get all the attention... seemed to me, anyway.

Foolish about people? Dogs love unconditionally...if that's foolish, then all dogs are. I don't know any dog who isn't in love with his/her owner.

Anyway, at the shelter where I work, we work with a Greyhound rescue that saves them from their lives of forced racing. once the dog is not winning races anymore, they are usually shot to death or abandoned. We pull them from the racetracks to give them a second chance. They are beautiful dogs, and contrary to what most people would expect, are pretty lazy. They do like to run about once a day, but most people who adopt them say they seem grateful to rest, and are couch potatoes, which is unexpected. Also very graceful and loving.

My husband's boss adopted a grey hound. Beautiful! Her name is Gracey. Retired from the track. I tell you what, she jumped a fence because she saw a squirrel on the other side. She was like lightening!! Trying to catch her was an all day event The best personality with lots of happy energy. Very demading on attention and affection. Plan a 1 hour walk daily or they get bord. Other than that she was a couch potatoe at night. You might want to ID chip the neck since they can get away from you and they are loved by so many others. You most likely won't get it back.
