Are emo & goths the same?

Do you think they're the same?

nah. goths hate the world and emos hate themselves.

Emo is supposed to be a genre of music but people have turned it into a style which I think is inspired by the Gothic style. Labels are overrated though.

well, emo is short for emotional. and gothics are emotional. but they keep it inside so thats why they cut themselves and wear black stuff. sooo...emo is the definition of gothics. but some people say "hey that guy's emo". so yes. emo and goth is the same. people are going to learn that.

okay ummm...lilmizkutie you dont know what your talking about Emo IS short for Emotinal but it is also a type of music...emos cut goths complain...emos hate themselves...goths are over dramatic and hates the world HOW IN THE F*** IS THAT ANYWHERE THE SAME???!!?!?!???!?

here's what I dug up on Emo
Emo
From my recourses supposedly an Emo was originally just a slang word used to describe some bands that got emotional, originally fans of Fugazi, a post punk band, in mid 1980's. It later became a sub-genre. Most found it offensive & disliked being labeled Emo. The original Emo is what is now modern day screamo, there were 3 waves. I believe the second wave some how led to the third wave which is modern day. It was basically when new music was cropped under the labile Emo. It was only just recently that clothes, style, & such was applied to it. The style of Emo is most commonly tight jeans(boys & girls alike, it's not on common for men to wear girl jeans in this style), long bangs, or fringe, brushed to the side, hair died black. Thick glasses are also common, or was originally common in the style as well as plad shirts & such. The style is less evolved from post punk than Goth in short I guess one could say. Also, during the third wave of Emo it became common for people to slit their selves to "fit in". How that works out I don't know. Note: not all Emo's slit themselves. & no, it is not a subculture, However, there is supposedly a movement in the process of making it a subculture, don't think it'll work out, & to be honest I kind of hope it doesn't. In my honest opinion Emo is not based on a solid foundation enough to say what exactly is & is not emo, specially when it comes to terms of music. The basis of emo has been changed twice except for the one basic Emo is Emotional. But when you think of it, how can one not be emotional when it comes to their music? Look at Cradle of Fith-their Dooms Metal, 69 Eyes- Romanti Goth, Amy Lee- Plasti Goth, & a lot other musicians. The only ones called Emo are the ones who dress the part-& as I stated, it was only just recently that the style was added to the genre, only a few years.

okay dontblamedaem0 in my world gothics and emos are the same. they are both depressed over life and they hate themselves & people. people have diff opinions about if they are the same. nobody is wrong. and yes, I know emo is a type of music. but its turning in to a type of person.

there 2 completely different genres but emo is a little bit newer than goth, so theyve taken parts and styles from it
theyve also taken bit from the "scene" genre
and ect
everyone borrows from everyone else
but even now, there are different kinds of emo styles and stuff
but no there not and will never be the same.

no not really...well kind of. goth and emo are both breaks off of punk. emo is generally tight jeans (that can really be of any colour) and a band top. goth is a whole range of things like buckled platform boots, black lipstick or blood red lipstick. but theres also gothic lolita (think mana), cyber goth ( which is very popular in japan in whick cybers wear fluro OTT clothes) alternative goth (think emilie autumn), vampire goths, medeival style goths (dresses in medeival style clothing). emos arent a huge range like goths and really only stick to one style of dressing. then thre are the scene kids that have a vague sort of emo hair but are obsessed with hello kitty, cartoons, dinosaurs etc and are all over myspace.

I would say I'm a emo/scene kid. Sorta a hippie. But schyeah, goths and emos are not the same and goth kids don't really cut themselves. And you can be emo without being a cutter.

um...xxxmeezexxx, goths don't hate life, or people. Emo's do not wear "funky/rainbowlicious" ( that isn't even a word!!!) clothes. They are not the same!!

They're not the same. Emo's a genre of music...but its been turned into a "lifestyle"
as far as goth...they're different types of goth. Depends on whether you're talking like that old-fashioned, elegant victorian goth or the morbid skulls and chains goth...?
