Are all athiests out to destroy religion?

Do you believe that all atheists want to destroy religion? If so, why?

I don't think atheists are out there to destroy all religion... sure you have your extremists but you'll always have that no matter the belief or lack there of.

I accept the fact that there is no way to prove or disprove God. So live and let live.

All the atheists on RichardDawkins (forum) do. They are fed up with [Abrahamic] religions and they're not going to take it anymore.

You realize that a true Athiest would be out to get rid of all religion not just the Judaic religions. You know Buddism, Hinduism, wicca, neopaganism, and many many more. So I guess you think the other religions are ok.

I support the right of anyone to follow their conscience so long as that by doing so they don't prevent other people from following theirs.

Thomas Jefferson sums up my sentiment on religion quite well:

"But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."

I don't really care what other people believe so long as they don't force it on me. Those who want to legeslate their religious values into the law of the land I will oppose to my last breath though.

I will debate cosmology with believers but deep down atheists have little reason to proseltyze. There are religions that I can't help but admire. I've always been fond of the Baha'I faith and the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). I like what they teach but I could never be one because the existance of a literal God just seems too unlikely to me. I read that after the awful Amish school shooting the Amish community realized that the family of the shooter must be hurting so they took up a collection for the shooter's family. Man that sort of love is hard core. Even a cynical old fart like myself can't help melting a little bit when I hear stories like that.

I do have a bit of a problem with organized relition because it seems to me the more organized a religion becomes the farther it strays from its ideals.

I don't believe that "All" of anyone or anything is in agreement...on any particular topic, etc. However, I do believe that a certain number of Atheists, have set their mind to destroy anything and everything having to do with faith in the one true and living God. I believe we are in the middle of Satans last thrust... toward mankind... I believe that he is the one behind this, and it is an orchestrated effort on his part... to abolish the faith of the fathers... and America in particular, as the seat of truth... in the world...He is concentrating all his energy in doing this, and is making great strides in that direction, However... God always has the last say... and although he is always speaking, we may be getting ready to hear a lot more from him than we have been used to hearing. My ears are certainly open to what he has to say, and I am watching with my eyes, what he is doing... and experiencing in my body, what he is doing with me, as a person, as one part of the whole... so, it is very exciting days, to say the least, as one put it," It is the best of days, It is the worst of days"... and I believe that could be said of the days in which we live. We will never be what we once were, but, it is yet to be what we are going to be... And I know that God established this nation... that his hand is upon it, yet, it has not yet been established in which direction he is going to take this country. We wait... and we pray... and we belive... and we hope...

I believe that organized religion is not what Jesus came to set up, at all... and that is what multitudes are rebelling against... and I am in agreement, up to a point... Not everything in religion is wrong, and the part that is, is what needs to be honed down... to the bare essentials.. so that we can go back to the basics ... to return to the way the apostles laid out for us, in other words , a way of life... something that you are, instead of something that you do, to sum it up, in a nut shell... Maybe all the sifting that is going on, is removing the chaff from the wheat... so that the multitudes can be fed... no one can benefit from the chaff.. it has no value... whatsoever... only as a fiber or a filler... no nutritional value in it... so... perhaps this is one of the things that Jesus is doing with his church, in the days in which we live... cleaning it up... removing the things that are not essential, and have no value, allowing for those things to remain that are pure, and holy and just and righteous, and essential.. to a healthy life in the spirit...we need not fear, whatever Satan plans... God says that the Gates of Hell, SHALL NOT PREVAIL AGAINST HIS CHURCH... So... Praise God.. what ever happens... read the back of the book... WE WIN !!!

Doesn't sound like someone who would be pro-religion.

Some who denies the existance of god, isn't someone who is agianst religion...just against praying into the clouds.

eleni, no. All (or even most) are not out to destroy religion. Atheists simply do not believe in any super - natural beings. They believe in most of the things that religious people believe in --- babies, nature, love, kindness, compassion, helpfulness, and so on. Individual atheists and religious people alike can also become bullheaded, mean, spiteful, or worse. As a society we should applaud the former and condemn the later, not because the person is an atheist, or christian, or muslim, or wiccan, or whatever, but rather because he / she strengthens or weakens humanity as a whole.

Sorry eleni, I guess I got sidetracked. I don't know what specifically triggered your question, but in my opinion atheists have a laissez-faire attitude towards religion as long as it stays outside of the US government workings (and by extension public schools).

And this is because they have mis -read or mis -interputed the meaning of the constitution, This country was founded on Christian values, and by men of complete faith in one true and living God, as creator and sustainer of all. The constitution was written to protect the church, not to protect government from the church, because at its conception, the church was the government. People of faith being the church, and being divinely protected and directed by God. What we now have is not much more than another heathen nation... Give it just a few more years... But, again... God always has the last say...

I asked the question because I am an atheist and I've noticed that many people seem to think that we atheists want to eliminate religion from the world. I'm curious as to how many believe that and why they do.

Its the equivalent of ME saying that 90% of all Christians have distorted views, and use their religion as a control mechanism. Which may seem true from my perspective at times, but I know it isn't. Generalization is the mother of all f-ups...

So. . . . . Show me some Atheist material that is not aimed at disproving Biblical materials. . . Everything I've seen is.
