How much does a webmaster make?

megan Asked by xoxomeganxoxo about 1 year ago, 1 answer.

I'm the school newspaper's webmaster (mainly cause I'm good with computers and I'm the only one who knows what I'm doing) but I was wondering what it's like to be a real webmaster, which I could logistically become one day. And if you don't mind me...

asking, how much do you normally make in a year?

In order to earn a good salary, today's webmasters no longer just are capable of uploading, downloading files and doing HTML.

Its a good idea to learn a couple of scripting languages (PHP, Ruby), know your way around a shell prompt (Linux), and most important, read-up on security.

All of this you can pickup by yourself. And since you're in school, you'll have a huge leg up on the other classmates doing programming and other courses because you'd be already doing it and have practical experience.

In terms of salary? The earlier you get experienced, the more you'll earn. The position you have now is an excellent start. If you have scripting language and security experience and know something about networking... expect around $50K as a decent starting salary.

The key to all of this is experience, coupled with a good tech education. If you have both, then you'll be better then 95% of people out there!
