don't count your calories, just eat healthily, cut out fatty, sugary foods, alcohol, junk food etc, eat plenty of veg, fruit, sensible quanties of protien and carbs, plenty of water and throw in some exercise, even if its just some walking or skipping, doesn't have to be the gym... you could eat 500 cals of mars bars or 500 calories of carrots...at the end of the day its not the calories its what you eat.

There is absolutely no problem with counting calories, but there's a huge problem with only consuming 500 calories a day. When your body doesn't get enough nutrients, it goes into something called "starvation mode"--instead of losing weight, you could gain. This is because your body holds onto whatever you consume and stores it because your body thinks it is starving--this is a survival technique. Experts recommend that you eat no less than 1200 calories a day to avoid starvation mode. In fact, I've done this and lost over 40 pounds (along with exercise). I eat healthy foods, making it easier to stay within a low-calorie range.
